We find this rose often when wandering through older gardens. ‘Mrs. Dudley Cross’ is a compact, shapely bush that rewards even the most careless gardener with a constant supply of fragrant, double, delicately shaped yellow flowers that blush a little pink in the sun. The stems are nearly always thornless and the foliage is healthy and handsome.

Large, flat, and very double blossoms of a rich soft pink are highly fragrant. ‘Baronne Prévost’ blooms fairly often during the growing season on a chunky, erect shrub. It is one of the most rewarding Hybrid Perpetuals in the garden, resembling the famous ‘Paul Neyron’, but has a slightly smaller flower and is more remontant.

We are asked for brightly colored roses all the time. Now we have one we can recommend. The semi-double blooms of 'South Africa'™ are a deep golden yellow, almost cantaloupe. The blooms open to reveal the stamens which are much the same color as the petals. Plant as a specimen or in combination with 'Plum Perfect'™ for a dramatic contrast. This is a great cut flower but it is thorny.

'Westerland’ is a rose for the bold and daring gardener. It seems to demand attention with its very bright orange, semi-double, three inch flowers. It is best used as a pillar rose to ten feet or as a large specimen shrub of 5 feet by 7 feet. Qualities of disease resistance, cold hardiness and fragrance put this rose in a class of its own. 'Climbing Old Blush' is one of the oldest climbing roses in commerce.  Being a sport of the shurb, 'Old Blush', the bloom form and color is identical to the shrub and only differs in size.  It is a very vigorous climber and can get quite large so please allow it plenty of space where you can enjoy its blooms throughout the year; a trait that is rare for most climbing roses.

This is quite probably the plant that writers in antiquity described as the Four Seasons Rose of Paestum. 'Autumn Damask' is the only one of the Old European roses to repeat its bloom, and some rosarians have suggested that it is a species hybrid with R. chinensis, created where the far edges of their ranges touch. Its garden value is undeniable, with richly fragrant flowers occurring in abundance on a compact, hardy shrub in spring, followed by scattered blossoms through the summer and fall. Light pink and double, this ruffled rose contains a good measure of Damask scent, possibly the finest perfume in the rose world.

This thornless rose grows like the Bourbons but bears Gallica-like flat blooms of a muted cerise lilac. ‘Reine des Violettes’ makes a chunky bush about five feet square with glossy leaves which require hard pruning in early spring to keep it compact.

Regarded as the only white China rose, ‘Ducher’ blooms a soft ivory-white for us. The buds are very round and sometimes have a hint of pink on the outer petals opening to a delicate swirl of fragrant ivory petals. Smaller than many Chinas, this is a good candidate for a container. Although it exhibits the typical bronzy new growth, the foliage of ‘Ducher’ is uncharacteristically light green.

This is probably the best rose in the Veranda® series; at least the brightest, hence its name, 'Brilliant™ Veranda'®. The very full flowers are intensely showy like a coral beacon. Plants are sturdy to three feet making this rose a perfect container plant or useful in a mixed planting.

As fragrant as 'Champneys Pink Cluster', this first rose to bear the Noisette name is charming in its own right. The blush white flowers are cupped and double, appearing frequently throughout the growing season but especially in great abundance in the fall. William Paul, the 19th-century nurseryman reported, "I have seen these roses blooming unchecked amid the early storms of winter." 'Blush Noisette' is one of the few Noisettes which maintains a nice bush form while displaying blousy flowers for which Noisettes are known. This rose is ideally suited as a free-standing specimen or as a pillar rose.

The climbing version of the rose bred in Germany by Wilhelm Kordes, ‘Crimson Glory’ is the standard by which all other red roses are judged. Deep velvety crimson in color, the cupped petals hold a rich Damask fragrance. The shrub rose won the National Rose Society Gold Medal in 1936, and the James Alexander Gamble Rose Fragrance Medal in 1961.

Named for General Lamarque, this rose is the result of a cross between ‘Blush Noisette’ and ‘Parks’ Yellow Tea-scented China’. A fine, vigorous climber, its flowers are of medium size, double in form, with white petals that have a touch of lemon yellow at the base. Nancy Steen, in The Charm of Old Roses, says that "the fragrance of the flowers is clean and delicious." We have had bouquets of ‘Lamarque’ on the table for Christmas Day. A superb climbing rose.

The breeding of this rose is fascinating, including such odd couplings as the Hybrid Perpetual 'General Jacqueminot' and the Wichuraiana and Tea cross, 'Dr. W. Van Fleet'. The final result was an exceptionally healthy and free blooming shrub with large, shiny green leaves and large, open flowers in a blend of yellow, orange and pink. The fragrance is very good, and, since it was bred by Brownell, it is very cold-hardy as well. Lafter may be a good choice as a hedge rose for those who like a lot of bright color in the landscape.

This rather late Noisette, 'Crepuscule' has large, loosely double flowers that open nearly orange, fading to a rich apricot-yellow. The dark canes have light green leaves and few thorns and are best trained as a climber. It never fails to attract attention every time it flushes into bloom.

The medium pink, very double-shaped ‘La Vicomtesse' flowers have the old-fashioned shape we all love. This rose is similar to those depicted in this 18th-century painter’s artwork, for whom it was named.  Keep this rose close for sniffing purposes.  Blackspot resistance is an added and appreciated bonus.
